Had a chance to mount a fishing expedition to the southernmost part of the USA the other day. A tough launch that consists of carrying the kayak over a trail of boulders, a 5 pound Omilu(blue fin trevally) thinly sliced, and a good IPA, make for a happy fisherman!

Even my sunny days have cobweb clouds.

Double Hull Sailing Canoes in Hilo Bay

Posted in Photography, Sailing, Uncategorized on June 20, 2011 by DriftingSon

I had the great pleasure of a nice little picnic day at Bayfront Beach with my family and a few hundred others that came out to see the voyagers from the south.  Such beautiful canoes they were- really amazing to see close up.  Especially as they each took turns passing by the beach, mostly moved along by one man on the giant steering paddle- that was really impressive to me.  Each vessel had a different dance to perform as they passed- Big Island Video News has a great video of the day that includes some of these.  I got a few shots from the back of the crowd, and thought I would try to get closer as the day wore on, but ended up finding myself content with taking turns with the family in our little sailboat.  Between rest breaks of considerable length near the beer and poke cooler, naturally.

Halemaumau glowing brightly.

A late night visit to our friendly local volcano finds it glowing brightly once again.  Kilauea is a volcano that has been erupting consistently since the 1980′s, yet is always changing.  Standing on the edge of the crater under a full moon is always an amazing experience- I just need to remember to dress warmly.

I’m happy to say that these images are now for sale, in various sizes of prints, or even as postcards and coffee mugs(!).   Not that I expect anyone to really be that interested, but- apparently I still enjoy the process of photography enough to want to put the stuff out there.

The Best Humpback Photo Ever! (via Pacific Island National Parks)

Marine mammals are awesome!

The Best Humpback Photo Ever! This must be the most fantastic photo of a humpback in Hawaii we have ever seen! Lori Mazzuca, the photographer, explains her photo (taken off of Kauai): “I was observing a strange interaction between a pair of bottlenose dolphins and a humpback whale, when it became apparent that the two species were collaborating in some way. The dolphin was lying on a humpback whale’s head wh … Read More

Tonight’s view of Kilauea in moonlight

Posted in Photography, Volcano on July 27, 2010 by DriftingSon

I keep trying to catch a night with the winds blowing a different way so that the plume will at least not bend to the right as usual.  But trade winds are trade winds, and they are just always there.  Oh well- nice night for a walk along the rim of Halema`uma`u crater.  While the lower extreme of Kilauea is burning houses, the chimney at the top keeps chugging away…
