Had a chance to mount a fishing expedition to the southernmost part of the USA the other day. A tough launch that consists of carrying the kayak over a trail of boulders, a 5 pound Omilu(blue fin trevally) thinly sliced, and a good IPA, make for a happy fisherman!

Even my sunny days have cobweb clouds.

I like to start my day with some good espresso, but it usually goes better than today.

Whales sing me songs

Posted in Fishing, iPhone, Kayaks on January 20, 2011 by DriftingSon

One of the truly special things in Hawaii that happens each winter is annual migration of the Humpback whales from the arctic.  They spend the winters around our islands laughing and playing and singing songs.  Today they sang a song just for me.  Out fishing off off the Hilo Bay breakwall today, the whales were going ballistic.  Aerial launches, full back-flops, tail slapping and flipper waving all around me.  At one point I realized I could hear their singing underwater, and then it was getting louder and louder.  I realized the sound was coming from within my kayak- the boat acting as an amplifier and sending the calls out through the hatch that was open between my knees.  I stuck my iPhone down inside the hull in the hopes I could record it- it’s a little faint, but it worked.  Click this to listen:  Whale Songs

At the end you can just barely hear the whales blow as the suddenly surface next to me, an adult and a juvenile swimming away, right before I am startled enough by them to say “Oh my god…”

It was a good day on the water- even though the trades kicked up to above 10 knots and caught me downwind from my launch.  It was a tough two hour struggle to get back to the beach, but I have a whale song and a 3.5 lb Moana Kali to show for it!
